I’ll admit, keyholes are not exactly a reason to visit a town, nor is Ouro Prêto. There are a lot of excellent reasons to visit Ouro Prêto, in the state of Minas Gerais:
- Brazil’s best-preserved colonial town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
- Ouro Prêto has numerous Baroque-Rococo churches
- It was the place of birth of Aleijandinho, one of Brazil’s most talented artists.
And while you are in this gorgeous, colorful, and historically rich town, do pay attention to the (many!) details. Coen’s eye constantly fell on dozens of intriguing keyholes, one of the many aspects that characterize Ouro Prêto’s old Baroque-styled buildings.
Here’s a selection of them. Aren’t they marvelous?
